HM Submarine Vandal

printer friendly version

Lost at sea on 24th February 1943 off the West Coast of Scotland, the cause of the fate of the Vandal and her crew of four officers and 33 ratings has never been found.

Vandal was built at Vickers Ltd. in Barrow and launched on 23rd November 1942. She proceeded to join the Third Submarine Flotilla in the Holy Loch and from there to sea trials off the Island of Arran. Her Commanding Officer was Lieutenant John Bridger RN.

The boat anchored at Lochranza on the evening of the 23rd of February 1943 and she left for sea on the morning of the 24th. She was never seen again. When she failed to return a search was begun on the 25th. There were reports of white smoke candles being seen two and a half miles north of Inchmarnock and of hull tapping having been heard one mile off the More Light but nothing was found and she was presumed lost on a deep test dive.

The wreck of the Vandal was eventually found in Kilbrannan Sound in June 1994. There was no obvious damage to her hull and the reason for her lost remains a mystery.
