A Jacobite song composed by Adam Skirving. The tune
is now popular in a bagpipe setting and is usually used for reveille.
“Hey! Johnny Cope” refers to General Sir John Cope
who joined the army in 1707 and served in the Scots Guards and the Royal
Scots. At the time of the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion General Cope commanded
the Government Forces in Scotland. Encamped in what he believed to be a
safe position near Prestonpans in East Lothian he was attacked at dawn by
Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army and routed. The General managed to escape
with a few of his cavalrymen.
